1. Camp - Thank you to everyone for bringing in your camp money. Please return your behavior/medical forms by Friday. Please be sure to label all clothes you are bringing to camp. NO electronic devices/machines will be allowed on the trip (e.g. CD players, gameboys, cell phones etc.). Please be sure to bring extra clothing to camp. An extra set may come in handy (e.g. you step in a puddle and get wet feet - socks, or you sweat a great deal when playing flags - t-shirt etc.). Parents are invited to visit the YMCA camp on Tuesday evening. THANK YOU TO PARENTS FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE YMCA CAMP EXPERIENCE. We will do our best to make camp a highlight of the year for your children!

2. EQAO - I will be sending home some EQAO prep./review sheets. Basically, it is a review of many things we have covered since September. IT IS NOT mandatory your child practice these sheets. I would like the kids to relax and simply do their best. EQAO test will be Monday, May 17 - Friday, May 21. Each day will consist of about 2.5 hours of testing.

3. Westdale track meet - If your are interested in helping me out with the Westdale track meet, please send a note with your child to school. The dates of the meet are Tuesday, May 18 and Wednesday, May 19. We will be having the track meet during the afternoons, when the kids are not being tested. Thanks!

4. Pizza orders - The next Pizza orders will be due Friday, May 21.

5. Holiday - Monday, May 24 is Victoria Day Holiday!

** Kleenex - It seems the cold and flu season have depleted our kleenex tissue supply. Please bring in one box of Kleenex to help the classroom cause.

** Donation box for the Radiothon for kids - Many of you have seen in our Westdale newsletter that Mr. Shiel's (daytime custodian) son Darren is very ill at this time. We will be thinking of Darren and Mr. Shiel (family) during this time. If you would like to help out, please send in change for the children's health foundation. We have a change donation box in our classroom.

** Steps to respect - We will be having our weekly classroom time this coming Wednesday.

** Spirit Assembly - We will be having our monthly spirit assembly this Friday morning. Students are reminded to wear Gold (yellow) and Blue for school spirit. Go Westdale! Parents/Guardians are welcome at the assembly. It will begin at 9:15 -9:30 am.

** Plan ahead for the February 25th early dismissal day. Create a neat outing for friends. Be creative, educational and fun!

** VIP - Today we looked at "The Law". It really made us think about our daily actions. Did you know you can be charged if you are as young as 12 years old? Next week we have a court case.

** Science -Circuits are a neat way to see how electricity works. We know how to draw a circuit on paper just like and electrician. As a class, we tested each of our circuits to make sure they would work. Science is pretty neat!

** Chess club - You could hear the brain wheels function as the kids played each other this morning at recess. The competition and fun are fantastic! Club is on Day 2 and 5 in the morning and Day 4 at lunch.

** P.D. day Friday - Don't forget you have no school on Friday

** Book Fair - we will be having a book fair sale this week at school. Our browsing day will be on Tuesday...our buying day will be on Wednesday. Many neat things to buy and read!

** Dance Wednesday morning at 8:15 am sharp.

Monday Afternoon

Periodically, I will be allowing the kids from 56K to publish some of their fine work. It will be a mixed bunch of many different types of assignments. Enjoy the ones for today.

My Pappy!

Teodoro Ricardo Torelli is his real name, but all of his 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren know him as "Pappy". (everyone else knows him by, Ted). My grandfather is very funny, he is always laughing. One hilarious thing he says to himself is." Teodoro would you like some coffee? Sure I would." He is a very happy man. He is always up beat and loves to talk. When I am unhappy, he just tells a joke and cheers me right up! My Pappy is a very good craftsman. He has built our family many things that mean a lot. He made all of the clocks in our house, caracels for my sisters and I, and little cases for us to put our things in. His latest projects are , treasure boxes with our names on them to keep our most prized possessions in them.

Overall, my Pappy means happiness to me.

One or Two

Lots of people think that there should be only beone ref in the NHL. I disagree. There should be two. Here's why

I think that if you have two refs, that means the players are more disiplined. There won't be as much"chippyness" bhind the play, because more eyes are on you. There won't be the extra "hack" at the goalie, for the same reason. In AAA minor midget (OHL draft year) son\me games can get way to out of hand. Just think of the NHL!!!!!!!!!

People really think that there should be a ref in the press box, calling the shots???? C'mon, then there would be time-outs for "technical difficuties" because the refs ear piece doesn't work. Just play the game, will ya????

And when the ref is taking the penalized player to the penalty box, wher's the other ref if a fight breaks out??? Who's the instagator??? You'll never know if your back is turned, so what are you going to do, let the fans vote???? No, you need two refs.

I know Don Cherry says " Oh you need only one ref so the players can play their game". But what will start to happen with rival teams is what happend to two AHL (American Hockey League) teams. So many fights and misconducts that there were were no players to play. That's really their game, isn't it, Cherry ??

The only basic con is not as much room on the ice. Although the NHL refs do a pretty good job of getting out of the way, they can't always do that.

Recipes from our classmates>

The Brit Squared Recipe

Put these ingredients in a saucepan:
4 cups of rice Krispies
1 cup of peanut butter
1/2 cup of corn syrup

Cook on medium high for about 3 minutes. (until the peanut butter is mixed well with the rice Krispies and corn syrup)

Put the ingredients into a square cake pan.
Put the pan in the freezer til nice an coo.
Hope you enjoy this recipe!

Jacob's Favourite Seafood "Linguine"

1 tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 clove of garlic, minced
1 can (796 ml) diced tomatoes
1 bay leaf
1 tbsp dried oregano
2 cans baby clams - 5 oz ( 1 can drained, 1 not)
We add 1 bag of frozen mixed seafood, but is optional
1/2 tsp sugar(optional)
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 bag medium egg noodles or 3 cups or so of bow ties or other pasta of your choice.

In saucepan, heat oil over medium heat; cook onion, stirring often, until tender. Add garlic, tomatoes, bay leaf, basil, oregano, clams and seafoood; simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes or until flavours are blended. Taste and add sugar (if using - I usually don't). Stir in parsley.

Makes about 4 cups (6 main course servings) Great as leftovers the next day, too!

Jessica's Banana treat

Banana
Chocolate syrup
Peanut Butter

Pour the peanut Butter on the banana and the syrup. Mix well and enjoy the taste!

b) Books - You can go to Scholars Choice or another educational store to buy a reasonably cheap review for different subjects.

c) Older brothers or sisters? Maybe an older sibling can help you out by creating a test or let you see some of their old notes from when they were in grade 5/6

There are countless ways to help yourself out with your review at home. It's now up to you, it only takes a few minutes a day, and just think of all the benefits! Enjoy your EXTRA learning!!

Recipes from Mr. K's Kitchen

Lettuce (yes, lettuce) Wraps

Oriental Lettuce Wraps
dice small or grate:
carrots, celery, broccoli stalks, cauliflower, mushrooms,
or any variety of veggies that you prefer. Toss with a good oyster sauce or tamari. Add fresh bean sprouts and toss. Spoon veggies into fresh, washed lettuce leaves of your choice. Roll cabbage roll style and enjoy.

Greek Lettuce Wraps
dice small:
tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, (a little smashed garlic)
toss with a good oil (I prefer extra virgin olive)a little lemon juice, add fresh basil or any herbs that you prefer. Spoon veggies into fresh, washed lettuce leaves. Add a few good olives etc. Roll cabbage roll style and voila!! a Greek roll.

Mexican Wraps
Smash soaked beans of your choice. Add a little cumin, chili powder, garlic or whatever your preference.
dice small: tomatoes and add to beans.
Now be creative. Add peppers, veggies, or whatever your tastebuds would like. Roll in washed lettuce leaves.

** Thank you to everyone who gave me a wonderful Christmas present...they were all fantastic gifts.

** BIG CHUNKS - Today, I explained to the students that I would be trying out a new form of teaching. "Big chunks", involves a greater amount of time spent teaching and exploring in the subject areas. For example we are spending big chunks of time on Math and Writing this week. Next week, we will be spending big chunks of time on reading and science., etc. After a few months with 56K, I have come to the conclusion that this is how they best learn and retain the information. I will be trying this out for the remainder of January. Questions???? I would be happy to talk to you at the school or over the phone.

** Constable Norman - Our friend and teacher, Constable Ian Norman, will not be teaching and spending time with us during the VIP program for the remainder of the year. As of December 28, he has accepted a transfer with the police department. He will be replaced by Constable Mike Costello, for 2004.

** Pizza orders will be coming out next week. They will be due on January 23rd.

Cooking with Mr. Koop

2 (8 ounce) packages refrigerated crescent rolls
2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 (1 ounce) package dry Ranch-style dressing mix
1 cup fresh broccoli, chopped
1 cup chopped tomatoes
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 cup chopped cauliflower
1 cup shredded carrots
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
2 Roll out the crescent roll dough onto a 9x13 inch baking sheet, and pinch together edges to form the pizza crust.
3 Bake crust for 12 minutes in the preheated oven. Once finished cooking, remove crust from oven and let cool 15 minutes without removing it from the baking sheet.
4 In a small mixing bowl, combine cream cheese and dry Ranch dressing. Spread the mixture over the cooled crust. Arrange broccoli, tomato, green bell pepper, cauliflower, shredded carrots, and Cheddar cheese over the cream cheese layer. Chill for one hour, slice and serve.

Makes 12 servings

Tuesday after school

Homework:
1. Reading/Writing - Adventure story rough draft checklist. Make sure you have fulfilled all the requirements of the list.

** Thank you to the parents who helped out with the pizza-day last Friday.

**"Good King Wenceslas", has started. We will be taking quite a bit of time from now until Christmas to work on this play about GIVING ! What a great reminder this time of year. Parents/Guardians, it would be great if a few of you could help to get the set and ver, very simple costumes ready for the kids. We wll be performing the play on the 18th.

** Carol sing - we will be having a carol sing on the morning of the 19th in the gym.

It is EQAO year for your child. We are trying to focus our efforts towards preparation. However, you can help me out here at the school by checking out the EQAO website, practicing problem solving with your son/daughter, reading together, playing educational based games, or believe it or not playing CHESS. I have done some research on chess in recent years and have read and personally seen the benefits of the game. It can improve many areas of learning...reading, math, analytical skills, problem solving etc.

**scholastic Book Clubs: I have handed out a scholastic book club order form to your kids. It should be filled out and returned by Friday morning. It's a great way to buy early Christmas presents.

** Ask your family what they think your 4 identity symbols may be...create a family symbol(s) together. Hang it up in your home :)
**Water Bottles--Although it is cool outside...the room temperature and dryness are often "hot". ALL students are still encouraged to bring in a bottle to have on the corner of their desks. Having a bottle also helps cut down on classroom "traffic".
**Parents/Guardians, please be advised that some of your children are not bringing hats, gloves and even coats to school..it is getting pretty cold on the playground...please help us encourage them to bring these items to school with them :)
**Parents/Guardians: Thanks very much for your continued support in regards to planners. Most of you are signing off on your kids planners and seeing they have their homework done. I hope it is also helping bridge the gap between what we do at school and discussion you can have with your kids.

Welcome to another week of school in Mr. Koop's room.

Monday- Some of the things we will be covering...

Math: Continue with our Data Management unit --interpretation of graphs etc.

L.A.: Descriptive writing paragraph due.
Continue with the Collections series in Reading (AM).
Reading comprehension in the afternoon.

Drama: Introduction of Christmas play.

Spelling: New list for the week.

Health: "Steps to Respect" in the afternoon.

Mr. Koop's Ginger Cooler
This drink originates in Ivory Coast, West Africa where I had the opportunity to study for 4 months in 1994.

Soak in water 20-30 minutes, and then scrape outer peeling from:

3 pieces of 10 cm ginger root
Cut ginger root into 1 cm pieces.

Combine in blender:

1 cup ginger root pieces
1 cup of water

Liquefy the ingredients

Add:

water to make approx 4L
1 cup (or what you'd like) of sugar
juice of 1 ripe lemon

Refrigerate for 1/2 day
Strain before you drink

ENJOY this "bighting" drink!!
